Design Considerations: Developing Products for the ASC Environment
A major shift is happening within the orthopedic device space. More procedures are moving out of the hospitals and into ambulatory surgical centers (ASC). With this shift comes a different set of demands from orthopedic device manufacturers, from instruments to implants to other surgical equipment. Further, product packaging, sterilization concerns, and available space are all factors impacting the development of these technologies. The Growing Role of Additive Manufacturing
The use of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing within healthcare and the development of medtech has been discussed for some time now. Until somewhat recently, it’s mostly been leveraged for rapid prototyping and gaining new perspectives on a patient’s anatomy. Today, however, additive manufacturing is being used for many more applications, including finished medical devices and production-ready parts. Further, AM is being moved to the point of care to allow physicians to gain greater access to its benefits.
